Autumn is the season when Japan is beautifully decorated with colored leaves. The autumn foliage at Kyoto's historic temples and shrines has a special atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. In addition to Arashiyama, located on the west side of Kyoto City, which is a representative autumn foliage spot, this tour will efficiently take you to Kodai-ji Temple in the Higashiyama area, Ohara Sanzen-in Temple in the northern part of the city, and Komyo-ji Temple a little south of Kyoto City, which cannot be visited in a single day by an individual.

- Nagaokakyo City is located about 10 km south of downtown Kyoto. Although not well known, it is called the “Maboroshi no Miyako (City of Illusions),” which was the capital for a little more than 10 years between the transfer of the capital from Nara to Kyoto. Komyo-ji Temple, located here, is one of the most famous spots in Kyoto for viewing the autumn foliage, with long of people waiting to enter the temple grounds. The temple is far from train stations, making it difficult to visit on your own.

- Arashiyama has Mount Ogura in the background and the Katsura River at its foot. Furthermore, there are World Heritage temples and shrines, making it the best sightseeing spot in Kyoto where you can feel the changing of the seasons as only Japan can. Autumn, when the entire mountain is tinted with autumn leaves, is especially recommended. You can enjoy sightseeing with free meals or enjoy Kyoto's unique Yudofu Gozen, a hot tofu meal.

- Sanzen-in Temple of Ohara, named after one of the teachings of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, which teaches that “even in the smallest action of the mind (ichinen), all the elements of the world (sanzen) are present.” The temple is located in a mountain village in northern Kyoto, an hour's bus ride each way from Kyoto Station. The clean mountain air and the Warabe-Jizo statues dotting the moss garden on the temple grounds will soothe your soul.

- This temple was built in 1605 by Hideyoshi Toyotomi's wife, Nene, to mourn her husband's death. Although Hideyoshi had a famous concubine named Yodo, Nene is known as the person who played a key role in bringing Hideyoshi, who was from a peasant background, to the forefront of his career. Kodai-ji Temple is where she spent the last years of her life in loving memory of her husband.
