Enjoy the arrival of spring while gazing at the blooming cherry blossoms. Nijukken Road is a 7-kilometer-long straight stretch of road lined with over 2,000 cherry trees. It is said to have originated as a road for members of the imperial family to visit the Imperial Household Agency's Imperial Ranch that once stood on this site. From 1916, it took three years to transplant Ezo cherry trees and other varieties from the nearby mountains. At that time, the width of the road on both sides was exactly 20 ken (approximately 36 meters), hence the name Nijukken Road. Currently, it has been selected as one of "Japan's 100 Best Roads," one of "Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots," and a "Hokkaido Heritage Site," and is loved by many people as one of Japan's leading cherry blossom viewing spots. Every year in early May, cherry blossom viewers come from all over the country to catch a glimpse of this magnificent row of cherry trees, one of the largest in Japan.
