◆Oarai Isomae Shrine
Oarai Isomae Shrine has long been revered as the guardian deity of eastern Japan. The enshrined deities, Ōnamuchi-no-Mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, are widely worshipped as gods of healing from all illnesses, good fortune, rekindling relationships, recovery, and restoration. The torii gate standing on a rock at "Kamiiso," a sacred place in the sea where the enshrined deity is said to have descended, is known as the "Kamiiso Torii." Many people visit to witness the sunrise rising from behind the torii gate.
◆Nakaminato Fish Market
It is a popular shopping street specializing in fresh seafood caught that morning and sold at reasonable prices. As a leading tourist market in the Kanto region, it attracts approximately 1 million visitors annually from both within and outside the prefecture. Furthermore, there are numerous restaurants typical of a port town, offering seasonal seafood dishes and conveyor belt sushi restaurants boasting large, fresh ingredients. Enjoy a free lunch break where you can eat whatever you like! (At your own expense)
Nemophila flowers and the sky blend together in a blue harmony at Hitachi Seaside Park.
Hitachi Seaside Park, located in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a vast 215-hectare park divided into seven areas, offering leisure spots and flower fields where visitors can enjoy nature. Opened in 1991 as a "flower park," it has expanded its large-scale flowerbeds since 1993 with daffodils and in 2000 with tulips, and in 2002 it pioneered the introduction of nemophila on "Miharashi Hill." Since 2007, it has also begun planting kochia, another unprecedented planting, constantly pursuing new floral landscapes. Nemophila, known as "Ruri-karakusa" in Japanese and "baby blue eyes" in English, is a lovely blue flower. The sky, sea, and blue hills blend together, creating a landscape that resembles a carpet of blue. ◆Nemophila blooming period: Typically mid-April to early May (according to Hitachi Seaside Park)
"Nakaminato Fish Market" sells fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
Nakaminato Fishing Port in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, experienced significant growth after World War II with the development of deep-sea fishing. It has played a central role in Ibaraki Prefecture's fisheries industry as the prefecture's only base for deep-sea skipjack and tuna fishing. Currently, fishing is mainly carried out by trading vessels that come from other fishing ports, such as skipjack tuna pole-and-line fishing boats and saury stick-held net fishing boats, as well as local small boats. Adjacent to Nakaminato Fishing Port is the Nakaminato Fish Market, a popular shopping street with numerous shops lining a straight 300-meter stretch, selling fresh seafood caught that morning at reasonable prices. You can find a wide variety of fresh local fish and seafood, including fish not usually seen in supermarkets and popular tuna. It's a great spot to enjoy shopping and dining while being caressed by the Pacific Ocean breeze and soaking up the lively atmosphere of the market. Enjoy a free lunch break where you can eat whatever you like!
A torii gate standing on a rocky outcrop creates a majestic landscape at Oarai Isomae Shrine, the place where the enshrined deity descended.
Oarai Isosaki Shrine is located in Oarai Town, Higashiibaraki District, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is said that a deity appeared at Oarai Isosaki in 856, and the shrine was founded. The main deity is Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, and the subordinate deity is Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto. The shrine sits on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and is famous for its "Kamiiso Torii" gate standing on a rocky outcrop. The enshrined deity is a god of matchmaking, and it is said to bring good fortune in love, marriage, family safety, protection from evil, and good luck. Furthermore, after being restored by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the second lord of the Mito domain, it has also gained popularity as a guardian deity of maritime navigation, as maritime accidents among fishermen ceased after the shrine was rebuilt. The guardian lion-dogs on either side of the Zuishinmon gate are made of brown Bizen ware. It is said that in the past, Oarai was an important transportation hub in the Kanto region, and the lion-dogs were donated by people who transported goods from the west by sea. Furthermore, the main hall was built around the same time as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and the decorative style is very similar.
